Descritpion: Tors are towers of delicately balanced rocks and boulders which are found on hilltops notably on Dartmoor. Here they are generally made of granite. and can be up to 10 m in height.
Examples include Yes Tor; Bowerman's Nose
Formation: There are several theories about the formation of tors. Palmer and Nielsen (1962) saw the formation linked to the removal of the surface layer by solifluction and then the exposed joints of the granite enlarged by frost action. This often results in blockfields around the lower parts of the summit.
